Vitamin D3 and K2
According to the oxford dictionary a synergy is defined as an interaction or cooperation of two or more organizations, substances, or other agents to produce a combined effect greater than the sum of their separate effects. In this vitamin D3 and K2 cooperate to produce a greater effect then they would separately. Vitamin D3 stimulates the movement of calcium from the intestine into the blood stream but it doesn’t navigate the calcium after that. When calcium is in the blood stream it’s expected to make its way to places like the bones and teeth, this is not always the case. When calcium is in the blood stream some of it or all of it may end up in the bones and teeth but some can end up in vital organs like the heart.
This is where the synergy comes into effect. The job vitamin K2 is to complement vitamin D3, when vitamin D3 stimulates the production of calcium it requires another protein to direct this calcium to its destination. Vitamin K2 stimulates the conversion of osteocalcins glutamic acid residues to gamma-carboxyglutamic acid residues which enable the osteocalcin bone protein to bind to calcium and navigate it to its destination. If vitamin D3 is producing all this calcium in the blood stream without vitamin K2 being present then there can be complications.
If vitamin D3 is taken without vitamin K2 calcium might not reach the skeletal frame and this alters calcium homeostasis and leads to calcium being withdrawn from the bone to subsidize for the calcium in the blood and vice versa. The calcium that is not making it to the skeletal frame may end up being deposited in vital organs, the heart especially. When calcium enters the heart, it builds up on the wall of arteries and prevents oxygen being carried through. This is known as calcification and it can lead to heart many heart risks including stroke and heart failure.
In essence taking vitamin D3 on its own can be a health hazard, but if taken adequately with vitamin K2 one can benefit from healthy bones and a healthy heart, There are numerous studies that have shown this to be true.
